Mail vs AI email assistants

AI email assistants — Shortwave, Superhuman-class tools, and peers — connect your mail and run AI across the inbox you already have. They optimize for speed through your existing mail. Mail optimizes for a different actor: an agent with its own address, behind a human trust wall.

When they win

You live in your inbox and want AI to help you process it faster. Polished mail UX. Triage, compose, and team productivity features built around the mailbox you already use. If the job is “make my email client smarter,” those products are purpose-built for it. They win on inbox depth, client polish, and workflows that assume the AI can see what you see.

When Mail wins

The agent is a separate actor, not a smarter view of your life inbox. It gets m-<botname>@mail.alix-services.com. You grant piece by piece: Unknown → Pending → Allowed / Blocked. There is no “index my whole life” prerequisite. You Allow newsletters you chose, research replies you expect, ops mail you approve — and Block the rest. Decisions happen on your phone after a magic-link confirm to the owner email. Default deny. The agent cannot escalate through the MCP or API beyond Allowed.

That matters when you are adopting AI and the risk you care about is over-eager access — not slower triage. Useful agents. Clear boundaries.

Fair line

They’re email clients with AI. We’re a trust wall for agents — different job. Comparing feature lists side by side misses the point. Choose the tool that matches the actor you are empowering.

What we don’t claim in v1

Mail is not a smart inbox UI. It is not a replacement for Shortwave, Superhuman, or similar assistants. RSS is a source, not a reader. Kindle Send-to-Kindle is Allowed-only and owner-scheduled — not a bypass of the wall. No Gmail/Drive connect-as-v1. No multi-tenant enterprise mail product. We give the agent an address and a progressive grant model — nothing more in v1.
